10 Safety Equipment Every Boating Enthusiast Should Have On-Board

10-Safety-Equipment-Every-Boating-Enthusiast-Should-Have-On-Board

There’s nothing scarier than being stranded without supplies in unfamiliar waters. Some accidents are inevitable, so it’s better to be prepared.

To do so, you will need these items on board:

  1. Bucket

Even though your vessel might not have a leak, there are many other ways water can enter your boat. Having a bucket ready will bail you out.

  2. Duct Tape

In case you do get a leak, you will be able to cover the hole with duct tape temporarily.

  3. Fire Extinguisher

You may be on the water, but that doesn’t mean fires can’t happen on board. Be sure to educate your passengers on the location of the fire extinguisher and its proper use before setting off.

  4. First Aid Kit

And a well-stocked one at that! You can never predict what might happen on water, so having the right supplies and the proper knowledge to use them can save lives.

  5. Flashlight

It’s hard to move in the dark because your field of vision is limited. But if you have a flashlight and some spare batteries around, it won’t be a problem.

  6. Flares

These nifty devices can be used as a source of light in the dark or as a visual distress signal. Always read through the manufacturer’s instructions before making use of a flare to ensure proper usage.

  7. Garbage Bags

Aside from keeping waste items segregated, garbage bags can also be used as makeshift rain ponchos. On top of that, they can keep items on board safe from getting wet.

  8. Life Jacket

One of the most important items to have on board. For added security, you should get ones that have been approved by the U.S. Coast Guard. Be sure to have one for every passenger and crew member before you set off.

  9. Ropes

This is a critical item you will need in case someone falls overboard. Apart from that, you will be using the rope to tie down loose items during a storm and to secure your vessel to the dock.

  10. Whistle

Not just any whistle either. It has to be a water-proof whistle which you can use to call for aid while on water. Other similar devices you could use are horns or bells.

While this is not a complete list, these items should help you address emergencies on board. For added safety and security, you should always check the minimum safety equipment required for your type of craft, along with the rules and regulations implemented by the U.S. Coast Guard.

Aside from securing the right safety gear aboard your vessel, you should also consider getting boat insurance. With it, you will have less to worry about in case your vessel gets damaged or lost.
